Women in politics

Does Sandra Gidley’s view apply to pharmacy?

From Mr M. E. James, MRPharmS

Sandra Gidley’s Broad spectrum article (PJ, 27 May, p620) included the comment that women’s voice is not heard until at least a third of an elected body is female. Am I missing something? First of all, until the Save Our Society group became involved in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Council elections, the President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary and Registrar of the Society were all female. Will the SOS group take note of this?

Secondly, my recollection is that few women were elected until the first-past-the-post system was replaced by the single transferable vote system. Is there a lesson there?

Thirdly, although I agree with Ms Gidley that in the wider scheme of things a female perspective in the discussion is essential, does that apply to the same degree within pharmacy?
