SUMMARY Since 1996, the care of individuals living with HIV has been transformed by highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), where a combination of three or more antiretrovirals is used as treatment. There are now four classes of antiretrovirals. The introduction of protease inhibitors in 1996 had a dramatic effect on altering morbidity and mortality in HIV-infected individuals.
