Council asked to consider premises fee that reflects the scale of a pharmacy's business
The branch representatives'
meeting carried without dissent a motion calling on the Society's Council to look into introducing a premises retention fee that varies according the scale of a pharmacy's business.
Tony Pugh (Brighton) moved: “That the Council should re-examine
the basis for the premises fee and consider whether instead of a single
fee it should be based on the premises size, turnover, number of items
dispensed, numbers of hours open, services offered or a combination of
these factors.” He said that the branch wanted to see a fee that
in some way reflected the services offered.
Allan Asher (East Metropolitan), seconding, said that the single premises
fee introduced in the early 1930s is totally inappropriate for today’s
pharmacy. A fee suitable for a single-handed rural pharmacy with a turnover
limited by its position and nature should not necessarily also be the
norm for a large supermarket pharmacy that has a much greater throughput
and the capacity to produce a much greater income.
