Accredited training

CSCI position on accredited training clarified

From Mrs H. Sommerville, MRPharmS

I would like to clarify the position that the Commission for Social Care Inspection has taken in relation to accredited training. This is set out in our recently published professional guidance “Training care workers to safely administer medicines in care homes”, available on our website (www.csci.org.uk).

Your article “NPA worries over loss of care home business” (PJ, 3 June, p646) states that “the Commission for Social Care Inspection has told homes that they must only use accredited training courses”. The CSCI regulates social care in England and care homes must comply with the Care Homes Regulations 2001. The reference to “accredited training” is in National Minimum Standards, published by the Department of Health. These standards are not legally enforceable but provide a guide to care providers and CSCI inspectors about practices that will meet the Regulations.

We believe that the new guidance will support a consistent approach by our inspectors. Additionally it provides advice to care home providers when they are selecting a training programme to meet the needs of their residents.
