Medicines administration

How to use an oral syringe properly

From Mrs E. A. Worthing, MRPharmS

The photograph that accompanies the news article “Children with HIV underdosed with antiretrovirals” (PJ, 3 June, p650) does not illustrate safe drug administration. If oral syringes are chosen to deliver medicines, the syringe containing the medicine should be positioned inside the mouth, towards the cheek. This minimises the risk of death due to choking and asphyxiation.

In worldwide practice, the choice of whether a syringe or medicine cup is used will depend on the abilities of both the carer and the child.
