More money for Scottish supplementary prescribing

New funding in Scotland will allow community pharmacists to set up or continue to run supplementary prescribing clinics.

The funding is an extension of an existing scheme and is a temporary initiative until the chronic medication service is introduced. It provides community pharmacists with £150 a week to fund either a half-day clinic each week or a full-day clinic per fortnight. A further £500 is available for start-up costs.

Details are given in an NHS circular to be published this week. It states that the initiative aims to “promote closer working between community pharmacists and GPs (whose GMS contract has a clear commitment to working in partnership with other health professionals)”. A total of £1m has been allocated to the initiative.

The funding will be managed by Annamarie McGregor, pharmacist prescribing co-ordinator at NHS National Services Scotland. Pharmacists who have applied for funding before will continue to receive the money.
