Frank Owens resigns as SPGC chairman
Frank Owens announced this week that he is to step down as chairman of the Scottish
Pharmaceutical General Council.
Mr Owens leaves office on 3 July after five years as chairman and three
years as vice-chairman. The SPGC will elect a new chairman at its next
meeting on 6 September. Current vice-chairman Paul Nightingale will become
acting chairman and Graeme MacBride, a standing committee member, will
become acting vice-chairman.
Commenting on his decision, which comes just weeks after contractors
in Scotland voted in favour of the new pharmacy contract, Mr Owens said: “I
feel I have achieved what I set out to deliver. The time is now right
for me to stand down and allow others to take over the mantle.”
He added: “It has been an enormous honour and a great privilege
to have had the opportunity to participate in shaping the future of community
pharmacy practice in Scotland. While much remains to be done, I believe
that future is now significantly more assured than ever before.”
An SPGC spokesman said: “In his period as chairman, Mr Owens led
the organisation through some of its most challenging times. His strong
leadership during the successful negotiations for the new Scottish
pharmaceutical care services contract will stand out as the highlight
of his chairmanship.”
Mr Owens plans to spend more time in practice and to find a new role
in pharmacy politics. |
