Mycophenolate sodium and cetuximab approved in Wales
Mycophenolate sodium and cetuximab have been endorsed for use in NHS Wales by the Welsh Assembly Government, following recommendations by the All-Wales Medicines Strategy Group.
Brian Gibbons, minister for health and social services, endorsed the
AWMSG’s support for use of mycophenolate sodium (Myfortic) for
prophylaxis (in combination with ciclosporin and corticosteroids) of
acute transplant rejection in adults who are receiving allogenic renal
implants and are intolerant of mycophenolate mofetil. The AWMSG’s
support for the use of cetuximab (Erbitux), in combination with irinotecan,
to treat epidermal growth factor receptor-expressing metastatic colorectal
cancer was also endorsed with restrictions, which the AWMSG outlines
in a letter to NHS Wales organisations.
The AWMSG appraises new products and indications that could cost NHS
Wales over £2,000 per patient per year. It can take into consideration
the number of patients likely to be treated with the agent and its guidance
provides interim recommendations to the minister for health and social
services before any National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
guidance. |
