Tribute

Searle In a tribute to the late Richard Ambrose Harry Searle, JOHN LEGGETT and STAN WHEATLEY write:

We are both so sad to learn of the death of Dick Searle, our fine friend for more than 40 years.

Dick first registered as a pharmacist in 1957 and in his early years practised in the West Country. We first met him in the mid-1960s on his appointment to manage the Boots The Chemists branch in New Milton, Hampshire. However, it was not too many years before he left Boots to acquire the pharmacy and village shop in nearby Hordle, where he quickly became an important member of the local community.

Dick took great pride in adding to his pharmaceutical talents by learning the ancient skill of curing his own hams and gaining the knowledge to be the village postmaster.

Exceptionally hard working, Dick was a man of great character and intellect. He could be fiery but he was intensely loyal.

Dick’s many and varied interests included music, sailing and cooking. For the past five years he had been a valued member of our Seriousaboutourmoney Investment Club. He so obviously enjoyed the fun and friendship as well as the education and, in no small way, contributed to our recent investment successes.

One of us (JL) remembers Dick on his last visit to the nursing home; he had been sleeping for days and had not eaten. When he woke up he requested a glass of Ringwood Best Beer. It was necessary to scour around the area trying to locate a retailer of this regional brew. On returning to Dick in triumph, he really seemed to enjoy checking that “the Best” had, in fact, been bought.

The world is a smaller place for Dick’s passing and his many friends will miss his huge example.

Our thoughts are with his wife Sylvia and his daughter and sons.
