Letters to the Editor

Controlled Drugs

Further clarification

From Miss P. R. Sejpal, MRPharmS

I write in response to the letter from John Timmins (PJ, 15 July, p64). The changes to the Misuse of Drugs Regulations that came in effect on 7 July require a prescriber identification number to be present on private prescriptions for Schedule 2 and 3 Controlled Drugs that are intended to be dispensed in the community. Therefore, an NHS prescription for Schedule 2 and 3 Controlled Drugs issued in a hospital that is sent to a community pharmacy for dispensing does not need a prescriber identification number because it is not a private prescription. Further information can be found on the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s website (PDF 200K).
