Pay deal accepted by college union members

The University and College Union has accepted a pay offer from the Universities and Colleges Employers' Association, lifting the threat of further industrial action that could affect pharmacy students graduating this summer.

Of the UCU members who took part in the ballot, which ended this week, 71 per cent voted for the offer, confirming a 10.37 per cent salary increase for academic staff over the next two years.

The UCU put the offer to its members last month, ending a period of industrial action, which saw the boycotting of university assessment and examination marking across the UK (PJ, 10 June, p670).

Some 34,563 UCU members took part in the ballot, representing 55 per cent of the ballot papers issued. The deal offers a further 2.5 per cent minimum pay rise in the third year, following an independent review of university finances and subsequent negotiations.
