Transitional arrangements for home oxygen service come to an end but FP10s continue

Transitional arrangements for the supply of home oxygen in England and Wales are due to come to an end next week, but pharmacies will continue to be reimbursed for prescriptions for home oxygen until next year, NHS Primary Care Contracting announced last week.

From 1 August GPs will still be able to prescribe home oxygen on FP10 forms and pharmacies will be reimbursed under usual arrangements until NHS regulations are amended next year. In addition, BOC has agreed with the Department of Health that it will continue to supply oxygen cylinders to community pharmacists until 31 August. Pharmacies with BOC accounts can continue to place orders and these will be filled in accordance with existing arrangements.

NHS PCC has also revealed that the new home oxygen providers are supplying 25 per cent more patients in England than the DoH expected would need therapy. The DoH had estimated 60,000 patients in England were receiving home oxygen therapy before the service transferred to the new suppliers. However, data gathered so far indicate that over 75,000 patients are being supplied.

Oxygen websites NHS PCC has announced that it is developing two new oxygen websites — one for patients and one for health professionals. Both are due to be launched at the end of August.
