Boots Group and Alliance UniChem's merger was completed this week and a new Alliance Boots group created. The group operates in more than 15 countries with a network of 2,700 pharmacies.

In the UK, it has approximately 1,500 community pharmacies and has established a new UK corporate headquarters in central London — run by a small team of staff from the Boots office in Nottingham and the Alliance UniChem office in Weybridge.

In addition, a range of Boots own brand products has been launched in 500 Alliance pharmacies in the UK and the group will begin selling its range of proprietary products, including its Almus generics range, in international markets. There may be no other obvious changes for a while.

Richard Baker, chief executive of Alliance Boots and formerly chief executive of Boots Group, said that the group’s priority for the moment is to continue with business as usual. Although the group has developed a new logo and there are plans to move to the use of one logo over time, trading fascias will not change immediately.

At the group’s launch it was announced that Stefano Pessina, formerly executive deputy chairman, Alliance UniChem, will hold the same position at Alliance Boots. George Fairweather is the group’s finance director, Ornella Barra is wholesale and commercial affairs director and Steve Duncan is community pharmacy director.
