Consultation launched for stoma appliance supply

Supply of stoma and incontinence appliances is the subject of a consultation launched by the Department of Health last week (PDF 120K).

The DoH has put forward changes to the listing structure of stoma and incontinence appliances and catheters in the Drug Tariff to allow easier comparison of prices. It also proposes creating two levels of service for pharmacies, dispensing doctors and appliance contractors. “Essential services” would have to be provided by all contractors, while contractors could choose whether to provide “additional services” or not. Remuneration for these services will be the subject of another consultation later.

Lindsay McClure, head of information services at the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, said: “PSNC welcomes this consultation which includes proposals that will build on services currently being provided by pharmacy contractors and will allow pharmacies the option of developing specialist services in this area. We will be responding fully both to this consultation and to the further consultation that will be published by the Department of Health later in the year on service remuneration rates.”
