David Nicholson to take on NHS chief executive appointment
David Nicholson, currently chief executive of NHS London, has been appointed the new NHS chief executive, the Department of Health announced last week.
Mr Nicholson will take over from Sir Ian Carruthers, who has been acting
chief executive since Sir
Nigel Crisp retired last March (PJ, 11 March
2006, p283), and will take up the post from September.
Mr Nicholson is former chief executive of Birmingham and the Black Country
Strategic Health Authority and of West Midlands South, and Shropshire
and Staffordshire strategic health authorities. He has worked in the
NHS for 25 years.
Welcoming the announcement, Patricia Hewitt, Secretary of State for Health,
said: “With 25 years of experience under his belt, David is passionately
committed to NHS values and has a proven track record of leading improvement
and reforms that benefit patients. Building on the achievements of Sir
Nigel Crisp and more recently, Sir Ian Carruthers, David’s challenge
is to ensure that the NHS continues to achieve even better results for
patients, while restoring financial balance.” |
