Aptivus risks highlighted

The risks of intracranial haemorrhage in patients receiving Aptivus (tipranavir) have been highlighted in a letter sent to health professionals by Boehringer Ingelheim, the drug's manufacturer, last week.

Boehringer Ingelheim says that 14 intracranial haemorrhages, including eight deaths, have been reported among patients receiving Aptivus in clinical trials.

The summary of product characteristics for Aptivus has also been updated. It now states: “Aptivus, co-administered with low-dose ritonavir, should be used with caution in patients who may be at risk of increased bleeding from trauma, surgery or other medical conditions, or who are receiving medications known to increase the risk of bleeding such as antiplatelet agents or anticoagulants.”
