“Emeritus” title to be awarded to some former members of Society

Fellows of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and members who have been on the Register for at least 50 years will in future be entitled to emeritus membership of the Society when they retire, the Council has decided. Use of the title will have to await the implementation of new regulations — yet to be drafted — that will replace the current Byelaws relating to honorary membership and fellowship of the Society.

At the August Council meeting, it was decided that an automatic right to emeritus membership should be extended to fellows and qualifying members who leave the Register in good standing after the regulations have come into force. Those who are no longer on the Register when the regulations come into force will be eligible for consideration for emeritus membership on an individual basis. Former members will not have to have had 50 years of continuous service provided they can demonstrate a total of at least 50 years on the Register.
