Lay and technician Council members to be made honorary members of Society
The 10 lay members of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Council and the two pharmacy technician members will in future all be honorary members of the Society for as long as they hold office, the Society's Council has decided.
The decision, made at the August
Council meeting, arose from a review
of policy to inform the drafting of regulations that will supersede various
sections of the Society’s Byelaws. Byelaw IV(3) provides that: “A
person who is nominated by the Privy Council to be a member of Council,
under the provisions of the Pharmacy Act 1954 shall, if not registered
as a pharmacist, be an honorary members while so holding office”.
However, only the three longest serving lay members were appointed under
the Pharmacy Act and are therefore honorary members.
As part of the policy review, the Council was asked to consider whether
the regulations should provide that all Privy Council appointees should
be honorary members.
Marcia Saunders said that it would be invidious not to include the two
pharmacy technicians members of Council and proposed that all members
of Council who are not pharmacists should be honorary members. Her proposal
was seconded by David Carter and carried unanimously by the Council.
