Consultation begins on overhaul of regulations for Council elections
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has begun a consultation on a proposed overhaul of the regulations affecting elections to the Council.
One major proposal is that a candidate in a national constituency should
live or work wholly or mainly in the constituency in which he or she
is standing, and that a candidate should be able to stand in only one
constituency. Currently a candidate must be “normally resident” in
the constituency.
Another major proposal is that the returning officer should be empowered
to deal with a challenge at any stage during or up to 28 days after an
election. This is part of a significant expansion and clarification of
the existing provisions and powers for challenge. Other proposed changes
are mainly for improved clarity.
The proposed revised regulations, approved at the August
Council meeting,
are set out for consultation in an Official
Notice in this week’s
Journal (p202).
