Medicines use reviews (MURs)

Unquenchable thirst

From Mr I. R. Davis, MRPharmS

I am not surprised that pharmacist retention is a problem for many pharmacy chains. I manage a branch of one such chain in Eastbourne and find myself under increasing pressure to meet the company’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for medicines use reviews. Having already conducted in excess of 160 this year, the pressure to do more and more, for purposes of meeting fiscal targets, is unsettling, stressful and goes against my professional principles and ethics. I conduct reviews when it is appropriate and necessary, and where the patient will benefit. Otherwise no MUR will take place, it is that simple. Being told I may not be performing adequately demotivates me and will only facilitate my return to locum work where I will not be subjected to such pressure. It is a sad state of affairs and it will reduce the level of care I offer my patients. Short-sighted companies take note.
