Knowledge and skills guidance published to help NHS pharmacists
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has published new guidance to help
pharmacists employed by the NHS to use the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework
(KSF) with other competences.
The guidance is available on the Society’s website (PDF 410K).
The NHS KSF lies at the heart of the career and pay progressions part
of Agenda for Change. It defines and describes the knowledge and skills
that NHS staff need to apply in order to deliver quality services and
provides a single framework on which to base review and development.
Pharmacists employed by the NHS require a KSF “post outline” (job
description). However, the framework needs to be interpreted for each
profession.
The guidance, which was commissioned by the Society’s policy development
division as part of the Society’s competences of the Future Pharmacy
Workforce Programme, is
a practical guide for pharmacists on how competences relevant to pharmacy
can be used within the generic KSF.
The guidance is written in question and answer format and is in five
parts. Part 1 provides general information on the NHS KSF. Part 2 provides
general information on competences. Part 3 shows how the KSF and
different competences can be linked. Part 4 explains how the KSF and
competences can be used for review and development of the individual.
Part 5 explains how the KSF and competences can be used for review and
development of services.
The Society’s head of policy development, Eileen Neilson, said: “There
is a wealth of information and support out there to help pharmacists
prepare KSF post outlines. This new guidance indicates where this information
can be found and which key organisations to approach for further detail.
It also demonstrates how the NHS KSF can be linked with competences and
how the development of a post outline will facilitate individual or service
reviews and development.
