First title in European postgraduate pharmacy series published

Christina de Bono, Anthony Smith and Tony Moffat

Christina de Bono, senior commissioning editor, Pharmaceutical Press, presents the first published book in the ULLA series to the series editors-in-chief, Anthony Smith (centre) and Tony Moffat

The first title in a new series of pharmacy textbooks is now available from the Pharmaceutical Press (the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's publishing division).

Pharmaceutical toxicology: safety sciences of drugs’ begins a series of introductory books for postgraduate students in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences produced by the ULLA Consortium (the European University Consortium for Advanced Pharmaceutical Education and Research), a collaborative initiative of a number of pharmacy departments from leading universities in the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, France and Italy.

The editors-in-chief for the first titles are Sandy Florence and Tony Moffat, from the School of Pharmacy, University of London. The retirement of Professor Florence has allowed Anthony Smith (dean of the School of Pharmacy) to join Professor Moffat as editor-in-chief for the later books.

The titles in the new series are aimed at PhD students but are also expected to appeal to postgraduate students undertaking masters or diploma courses, to undergraduates for specific courses and to practising pharmaceutical scientists. Other early titles will include ‘Paediatric drug handling’, ‘Molecular biopharmaceutics’, ‘Proetomics and metabolomics in pharmaceutical science’ and ‘Biomedical and pharmaceutical polymers’.

Professor Moffat said: “This is an exciting new venture. The concept is to have a series of textbooks in different subject areas aimed at science graduates entering a PhD programme in the pharmaceutical sciences. The books will be both an introduction to the subject and a source of references for further reading and information.”

Paul Weller, director of development at Pharmaceutical Press, said: “We are delighted to be working with the ULLA Consortium in the development of this important new series. Many individuals worldwide embark on postgraduate courses in the pharmaceutical sciences and would benefit from access to reasonably priced introductory texts on specific areas of pharmaceutical science”.

‘Pharmaceutical toxicology: safety sciences of drugs’ is edited by Gerard Mulder, director of research at the Leiden/Amsterdam Center for Drug Research, the Netherlands, and Lennart Dencker, professor of toxicology and dean of the faculty of pharmacy at Uppsala University, Sweden. The book provides an overview of the methodology and requirements of preclinical safety assessments of new medicines. After a general introduction and a number of chapters on basic toxicological principles, it goes on to look at organ toxicity of drugs, with chapters on the liver, the kidney, the respiratory system and the immune system.

The 272-page paperback book costs £29.95. UK orders can be placed by telephone (01767 604 971), fax (01767 601 640) or e-mail (rps@turpin-distribution.com) or through the Pharmaceutical Press website
