“A proper pharmacist?”

From Dr R. C. Jacob, MRPharmS

I write regarding the standing of pharmacists in the public domain. I joined the prison service 40 years ago as chief pharmacist at Brixton Prison. One day, a prison officer had occasion to call into the pharmacy with a prisoner in tow.

After the officer and I had finished our conversation, the prisoner said: “Excuse me, sir, but are you a proper pharmacist?” Resisting the temptation to be facetious, I assured him that that I was. Then he said, in awe, if not incredulity: “Do you mean to say that you could actually work for Boots?” I felt that I had arrived.
