NHS Scotland cuts fraud by £18m in five years

Counter-fraud activities by NHS Scotland have led to cumulative savings of £18m since the inception of NHS Scotland Counter Fraud Services in 2000–01. Almost a third of that saving — £5.5m — was achieved in 2005–06, two years after the service was extended from its limited start to cover all of Scotland. At the time, the expectation was that the service would have had a net deficit of £700,000 last year, rather than the £5.5m saving.
