New guide to the management of patients with schizophrenia
A new book from the Pharmaceutical Press (the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's publishing division) provides guidance for pharmacists on the management of patients with schizophrenia.
‘Schizophrenia in
focus’ is the latest addition to a series
of introductory texts on the pharmaceutical care of patients with chronic
conditions.
They are designed to provide practical information on the pharmaceutical
care, medication and management of patients.
The early chapters of the new book, written by David Taylor, chief pharmacist
at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, discuss the disease, its
causes, its pathology and its neurochemistry. A chapter on the development
and evaluation of antipsychotics is followed by several chapters devoted
to specific drugs or groups of related drugs. Two further chapters look
at antipsychotic-induced movement disorders and other adverse effects
of antipsychotics.
The Pharmaceutical Press says: “Schizophrenia is one of the most
common mental illnesses. Its prevalence and chronicity ensure that pharmacists
in both primary and secondary care will frequently be presented with
opportunities to improve the lives of people with this often devastating
condition.”
The 272-page hardback book costs £29.95.
Other books in the “In focus” series are ‘Diabetes
in focus’ by Anjana Patel, ‘Hypertension
in focus’ by
Susan Shankie and ‘Osteoporosis
in focus’ by Niall Ferguson.
A further book, ‘Parkinson’s disease in focus’ by Charles
Tugwell, is in preparation and due to be published in June 2007.
