Synergy Award goes to analytical chemist

This year's Synergy Award was presented to Kenneth Leiper, an analytical chemist and qualified person who is now an independent consultant in pharmaceutical quality systems, analytical science and process analytical technology.

The Synergy Award is presented annually, at the discretion of the President of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, to a person who is not a pharmacist but has made an outstanding contribution to the pharmacy profession.

Mr Leiper has held a number of senior management positions with Glaxo/Wellcome Manufacturing during his career. One of his main achievements was the development of computer-aided chemistry systems to facilitate process understanding and control of active pharmaceutical and drug product manufacture.

Mr Leiper is a former member of the British Pharmacopoeia committee on antibiotics and the European Pharmacopoeia committee on synthetic products.

Since officially retiring in 1996, Mr Leiper has continued his involvement in manufacturing through his consultancy work with major pharmaceutical companies, PAT equipment vendors and regulatory agencies.
