Complementary medicineNo clear evidenceFrom Dr S. A. Malcolm, MRPharmS Complementary or alternative medicines are names given to remedies for which there is no clear evidence that they work. Any treatment that is shown by proper scientific inquiry to be effective automatically enters the corpus of orthodox medicine. Contrary to the suggestion by Peter Houghton (PJ, 19 August, p221), acceptance as conventional treatment is not restricted to medicines whose mode of action is fully understood. Stewart Malcolm |
