NICE to tackle practices that persist without evidence base

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence will begin a new programme to help the NHS to reduce the amount of money spent on treatments that lack a sound evidence base, the Department of Health has announced this week.

NICE will now publish three additional kinds of work:

· Technology appraisals and clinical guidelines aimed at reducing practice that is no longer appropriate or effective and does not improve patient care

· Reminders of existing NICE recommendations for interventions that are ineffective or poor value for money

· Commissioning guides offering practical advice for NHS commissioners on how to establish services in line with NICE recommendations
