New edition of guide to advising on non-prescription medicines

Non-prescription MedicinesA new edition of a guide to advising on over-the-counter medicines is now available from the Pharmaceutical Press (the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's publishing division).

The new publication is the third edition of ‘Non-prescription medicines’, written by Alan Nathan, lecturer in community pharmacy in the department of pharmacy at King’s College London.

The revised and updated book assesses the range of over-the-counter medicines that can be recommended for the most frequently encountered minor illnesses, as well as products for emergency hormonal contraception and smoking cessation. Further removals of medicines from prescription-only control since the second edition have allowed the author to add new chapters on cardiovascular medicines, fungal nail infection and migraine. The book now covers 40 common conditions, discussing the treatment of each condition, making recommendations from the products available, and giving evidence to support the product advice.

The Pharmaceutical Press says: “This book will enable pharmacists, GPs, nurses and other health care professionals to make well-informed recommendations and to give patients and customers sound advice on non-prescription medicines.”

The 448-page paperback book costs £29.95. UK orders can be placed by telephone (01767 604 971), fax (01767 601 640) or e-mail (rps@turpin-distribution.com) or through the Pharmaceutical Press website
