Letters to the Editor

Retention fee

An incentive?

From Mr I. M. Caldwell, FRPharmS

Bill Brookes sought guidance on whether or not he should pay for access to the obituary columns and the letters pages in The Pharmaceutical Journal next year (PJ, 26 August, p250). I can only offer him one incentive. I would miss him — certainly not enough to pay his fees myself but enough to write this letter. Over the years we have disagreed, supported one another, argued, congratulated and consoled one another through these columns. I offer him a wee suggestion on how to continue this affair without paying even the reduced fee — read the letters on the internet. The editor might even print his response to whatever grabs him. On the other hand, what else could he spend his fee equivalent on? A dozen packets of cigarettes — but he does not smoke. Twelve bottles of supermarket plonk — takes all sorts. Less than half a television licence?

Let us face it, he gets a chance for an occasional niggle, he can argue with other old grumps like me and he gets to remain a fellow. Think about it!
