Pharmacists to provide guidance on alcohol intake
A campaign to help the public become more aware of their alcohol intake and the impact it could be having on their health is being launched in community pharmacies across Carmarthenshire next month.
The campaign, which starts on 2 October, is being co-ordinated by Steve
Simmonds, service development manager at the National Pharmacy Association.
Mr Simmonds told The Journal that members of the public who are concerned
about their alcohol intake will be taken through a screening process
designed by PRISM the Mid and West Wales alcohol and drug service. Advice
and information, tailored to the reported level of alcohol consumption,
will then be given by pharmacy staff. “Where additional support
is deemed to be required the pharmacy will make a direct referral to
the PRISM support service,” Mr Simmonds explained.
Mr Simmonds pointed out that community pharmacists are regularly involved
in providing lifestyle advice to patients. “This exciting campaign
will help improve pharmacist’s confidence in providing guidance
on alcohol consumption,” he said.
In advance of the campaign, a training and education evening has been
arranged to train pharmacists on aspects of safer drinking and how to
support people to make a change to their lifestyle.
