Minor illness or major disease? The clinical pharmacist in the community’, by Clive Edwards and Paul Stillman. 4th edition. Pp x+285. Price £24.95. London: Pharmaceutical Press; 2006. ISBN 0 85369 627 6

Minor illness or major disease? The clinical pharmacist in the communityThis book addresses medical conditions that can be treated with pharmacy-only and over-the-counter medicines. It is useful for pharmacy students and pharmacists.

There are two sections. The first section is about minor illnesses. The second section deals with smoking, cardiovascular disease and travel health. There are 15 chapters covering topics such as headache, cough, constipation, ear and eye conditions. Each chapter begins with detailed information on the topic followed by a list of symptoms and what each of these signifies. Next, drug management is discussed. Each chapter ends with a concise, yet detailed, summary, a “when to refer” box, as well as case studies to test the reader’s learning.

This is a detailed, yet easy-to-read, book. It provides an update on clinical knowledge and could be used to support continuing professional development. The only flaw of this book is that the brand names of pharmacy-only medicines are not provided, just the drug names.

This book is paperback and contains diagrams and photographs of the medical conditions discussed. It is a must-read for all pharmacists to ensure that they give the best medical treatment and advice to their patients.
