The death has been announced of Nils-Olof (“Nippe”) Strandqvist, a Swedish pharmacist and former president of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), who was made an honorary member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2001.

Dr Strandqvist graduated as a pharmacist in 1959 and after a range of appointments in community pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry became pharmacy manager at the University Hospital in Uppsala in 1982. From 1987 to 1996 he was head of the department of quality in pharmacy service at Apoteksbolaget (the National Corporation of Swedish Pharmacists).

He was vice-president of FIP from 1987 to 1990 and president from 1990 to 1994. As president, he pioneered the federation’s adoption of an international code of good pharmacy practice, which was subsequently adopted by the World Health Organization. In 2002 he received the André Bédat award, the FIP’s highest professional award.
