Library reduces cost of photocopying service

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's library has reduced its photocopying service fees for members requesting journal articles or extracts from books.

For the standard service, the flat rate for members was previously £3 for every 10 or fewer pages. The rate has now dropped to £1 for the first page and 25p for each page thereafter. The extra 75p on the first page is to cover the cost of processing, delivery and VAT. The change means that for an average request of three pages the cost has been halved from £3 to £1.50. A request for 13 pages would now cost £4, compared with £6 previously. The new rates apply to requests from members living overseas as well as those based in the UK.

Under the standard service, requests are processed within three days and despatched by post, fax or as e-mail attachments in the form of PDF files.

The library also offers an urgent service, under which requests received by 3pm are processed on the same day and despatched within two hours of the request by fax, e-mail or first class post. The new rate for this service is £2 for the first page and 50p per page thereafter, compared with a previous rate of £6 for every 10 pages (or fewer) before the revision.

A library spokesman said: “Information is crucial to the work and professional development of pharmacists, and we are pleased that we have made it even more affordable.”

If the library does not have the relevant journal or book in its collection, it can obtain photocopies for members through the Inter-Library Loan Service. The cost for this service varies and members should allow at least two weeks for delivery of the photocopies.

The new rates apply only to photocopies for private study or research purposes. Where photocopies are required for commercial purposes (which must be within the terms of EU and UK copyright legislation and permitted by the publisher), the rate remains at £20 (standard service) or £30 (urgent service) for up to 40 pages. Photocopying rates for non-members also remain unchanged.

The reduced cost of photocopying is one of a number of recent improvements in the service provided to members. These include late opening on Thursday evenings and longer loan periods for books borrowed from the library (PJ, 26 August, p262).

Further information about the library services can be obtained from the Library, Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 1 Lambeth High Street, London SE1 7JN (tel 020 7572 2300; e-mail library@rpsgb.org) or from the library pages in the Information Resources section of the Society’s website.
