Retention fee

I will think about it!

From Mr W. T. Brookes, FRPharmS

Ian Caldwell offers me an incentive to stay on the Register (PJ, 23 September, p366), one which I confess had not crossed my mind — that he would miss me. Flattering. I am almost persuaded, if only, as he says, “to continue this affair”. Almost — but here is the niggle. The move to have just two membership categories, practising and non-practising, added quite a bit to the retired members’ retention fee. The Council’s attempt to deal with that issue brought objections from the Privy Council’s advisers and was dropped. The Council promised to address the issue again but more than 12 months down the line nothing appears to have happened apart from a strange idea about “emeritus” status. Since there appears to be no agreement on what the term means or how and when it would be implemented we are no further forward.

So I thank Ian for his letter. As he says, I get a chance for an occasional niggle, to argue with other old grumps like him and to remain a fellow. And I suppose I get the chance to go the the annual general meeting and branch representatives’ meeting and meet old friends and colleagues. But what about Council’s promise? Almost … yes … I will think about it.
