Society summary

Society to research IT needs in community pharmacy

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society is to carry out research into the information technology requirements of community pharmacy.

The aim will be to ensure the full delivery of the new community pharmacy contracts and other developments in England, Scotland and Wales, involving other pharmacy bodies, other stakeholders and the government health departments in England, Scotland and Wales.

At the October Council meeting, it was also agreed that the Society should identify those areas where standardised data sets could be established (eg, medicines use review) and propose the content of those data sets.

The Society would also identify the minimum professional standards that would be expected from those operating an IT system.

It would develop a case for pharmacists, particularly community pharmacists, having access to patient information and it would encourage the Department of Health, doctors’ groups and patient groups to support its case.
