Revised Council election Regulations go to Privy Council for approval
Revised Regulations for the election of Council members have been submitted to the Privy Council for its approval.
At the October
Council meeting, the Council was reminded that in August
it had approved a new draft of Regulations for the election of Council
members. The new draft, which would entirely supersede the existing election
Regulations, had been gazetted and the 60-day gazetting period had now
ended.
The only comment received from within the profession had been from the
Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists, which had written: “We wish to
object to the proposed method of election for Council members by the
simple majority method, as this favours the majority sector of practice,
community pharmacy. The Council demonstrated little interest in dealing
with managed service issues over the two years before the most recent
Council elections, when there was no elected member from the managed
service. We consider the method of election should be by single transferable
vote.”
Other than this, the only comments received had been minor, technical
points from the Privy Council advisers. These included clarifications
and the removal of replicated text. They also included the moving of
provisions relating to resignation and non-eligibility to remain a member
of Council to the end of the relevant section to make it easier to delete
them at a later stage when they were incorporated into new Regulations
on the Council, its meetings and its procedures.
After considering the guild’s submission, the Council approved
the minor changes proposed by the Privy Council advisers and agreed to
submit the revised draft to the Privy Council for its formal approval.
