NHS fraudsters face parallel actions under new policy

Health professionals who defraud the NHS are to face criminal, professional disciplinary and civil recovery proceedings all at the same time, the NHS Counter Fraud and Security Management Service has announced.

Announcing new guidance for implementation by NHS counter fraud specialists, Counter Fraud Service managing director Jim Gee said: “This document is a clear statement of our intent to apply the toughest possible sanctions. . . . NHS fraudsters now face the prospect of losing not only their liberty, but their assets, their employment and their right to practise professionally.”

Previously, professional disciplinary proceedings and civil action by the NHS to recover its losses have only taken place after criminal proceedings have concluded.
