Prescribing

GPs should clearly state their intentions

In light of the law suit against Lloydspharmacy concerning the dispensing of dexamethasone tablets (PJ, 14 October, p440), I suggest GPs should write either “maintenance dose” or “one-off dose” on prescriptions for steroids to indicate clearly what their intentions are. Some prescriptions have been written, for example, “fluoxetine 20mg capsules. Take one daily for depression” to show the indication for the medicine being taken.
