Pushing ahead with simvastatin

From Dr B. P. Curwain, MRPharmS

Barinderjit Shoker (PJ, 28 October, p513) suggests Pfizer has opened a can of worms. Worms as we know are actually useful creatures. He says “in certain primary care trusts the use of simvastatin is more encouraged as first-line treatment”. In the interests of NHS finances, I would hope that all PCTs are now pushing ahead with this since there are many millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to be saved. As we have shown in the New Forest, where we have moved from less than 50 per cent to over 75 per cent simvastatin, it can be done.  Perhaps community pharmacists can help their local PCTs by talking to their prescribers about this?
