Arnica gel first product to be granted herbal registration

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has granted the UK's first product registration for a “traditional herbal medicine”.

Manufacturers wishing to register a product under the traditional herbal medicine scheme are required to submit a dossier to the MHRA showing that the necessary standards of quality, safety and patient information have been met.

The MHRA has given its first traditional herbal registration and corresponding “THR” number to Atrogel Arnica Gel (Bioforce UK). According to the MHRA, “minor claims are permitted on the basis of evidence of traditional use”.
