Smoking increases asthma

Regular cigarette smoking increases the risk for new onset asthma among adolescents, a prospective study of 2,609 children reveals. Children who reported smoking 300 cigarettes or more in the previous year were almost four times more likely to develop asthma than non-smokers. The increased risk was greater among children without allergies and among children exposed to maternal smoking in utero (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine 2006;174:1094).
