No causal relationship between oseltamivir and psychiatric disorders

There is no causal relationship between oseltamivir (Tamiflu) use and psychiatric disorders, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has reminded prescribers.

In a statement, the EMEA reaffirmed its position that there is no new safety signal relating to psychiatric disorders while taking oseltamivir and therefore no need to change current prescribing advice in the EU.

“The agency has been aware of incidents of psychiatric disorders associated with the use of Tamiflu since its approval. No causal relationship has been identified between use of Tamiflu and these incidents,” it said.

The statement follows recent media interest in the drug and reports that use of the drug was linked to a number of psychiatric episodes and suicides in Japan.
