Pharmacist is young researcher of the year

Danielle Turner |
Danielle Turner has been named young researcher of the
year in the Times Higher Awards 2006. Dr Turner, a pharmacist researcher at the University
of Cambridge, is investigating how drug treatments can improve memory
in patients with schizo-
phrenia.
Speaking to The Journal when she was shortlisted
for the award earlier
this year (PJ, 30 September, p381), Dr Turner said: “We found that
it is possible to improve short-term memory in people with schizophrenia
following a single dose of modafinil. We are now looking to see whether
these improvements will be maintained with long-term treatment and the
impact this will have on patients’ quality of life.”
A report profiling the winners in The Times Higher Education Supplement said that Dr Turner, an Aston University, Birmingham, pharmacy graduate,
had demonstrated a good balance between research, ethics and public understanding
and that it was her ethical achievements that gave her the edge over
other shortlisted candidates. |
