Independent prescribing courses

Two conversion courses for existing supplementary prescribers that will give participants independent prescribing status have been approved by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. The courses are the first to be announced and will be provided by Reading and Keele universities.

The University of Reading course began last week when 21 pharmacists attended a study day. The course will comprise two days of study and two days of practical experience, and will initially be offered two or three times a year. The first students are expected to qualify in February 2007. There are 43 students in the first cohort at Keele University, which offers a flexible 50-hour course to be undertaken anytime within six months for previous students of the university’s supplementary prescribing course. The first independent prescribers are expected to qualify from Keele University in January 2007.

More courses are in the process of being accredited, details of which will be available on the Society’s website as soon as they have been approved.
