Pfizer pulls plug on its HDL improving drug torcetrapib

Pfizer has ceased development of its investigational cardiovascular therapy torcetrapib because of safety concerns.

The drug, designed to increase high-density lipoprotein levels, was being tested in a large Phase III trial. However, the trial’s independent data safety monitoring board recommended that the trial be suspended after data suggested that the drug, given in combination with atorvastatin, was associated with increased mortality compared with atorvastatin alone.
