New book focuses on asthma

Asthma in FocusA new book on asthma from the Pharmaceutical Press (the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's publishing imprint) is the fourth book in its “in focus” series deemed essential for pharmacists, preregistration trainees and undergraduate pharmacy students.

Asthma in focus’ has been written by Anna Murphy, consultant respiratory pharmacist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The book explains that asthma is a common disease affecting 20 per cent of children and 7 per cent of adults in the UK — and the incidence of the disease is rising. However, it says, the correct treatment, support and advice will allow most people with asthma to lead full and active lives.

The book goes on to discuss the drugs used to treat the disease, and describes how the pharmacist can get involved in counselling patients. Chapter topics include pharmacological management, management of acute asthma, lifestyle management. monitoring asthma control, drug delivery to the lungs and inhaler devices, patient education and self management, and asthma in pregnancy.

Chapters on specific drug therapies cover beta-2 agonists, anticholinergics, corticosteroids, methylxanthines and leukotriene antagonists. The book also looks at new therapies and future developments in asthma management.
