Statin prescribing offers biggest opportunity for savings

Statin prescribing has been identified by the Department of Health as an area that offers the NHS in England one of its biggest opportunities to make savings that can then be spent on other aspects of patient care.

The second set of quarterly “Better care, better value” performance indicators published at the end of last year show that savings across England would amount to £85m annually if 69 per cent of prescriptions for statins were for generic pravastatin or simvastatin, as in the upper quartile of primary care trusts.
