Members urged to respond to consultations on education

A call for members of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to respond to consultations on the future of pharmacy education was made after a seminar held by the Society's Academic Pharmacy Group on 12 January 2007.

The seminar was held to discuss the report “Health care professional education and training: how does UK pharmacy compare?” by David Wright and Martin Loftus of the University of East Anglia (PJ, 2 December 2006, p671). The report found that UK pharmacy education is handicapped by being treated as a science subject rather than a clinical qualification.

Commenting on the report, the chairman of the Society’s Education Committee, Graham Phillips, said: “This report highlights why the Society’s education reform programme ‘Fit for the future’ is so important. We can learn from pharmacy education in other countries and other health care educators in the UK, and we have to take a serious look at clinical teaching and the funding needed to support it in a meaningful way. … I would urge all members to respond to the ongoing consultations on the future of pharmacy education which can be found on the Society’s website
