An analysis of pooled data from trials of varenicline shows that, compared with placebo, the drug triples a smoker's chance of continuous abstinence at 12 months.

The authors of the review, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, call for trials that make direct comparisons between varenicline and nicotine replacement therapy (published online on 24 January 2007).
